I would think it was earlier.... but I have nothing to support that theory royw365: from everything i read, this was THE defining book in the genre Z0rPr1me: k. Z0rPr1me: Roy you read is other book ? royw365: he has like 4 or 5 more, and i cant remember, none of the titles ring a bell royw365: i like bruce sterlings cyperpunk much better Z0rPr1me: okies. Well I liked the movie Johnny Mnemonic... mb I'll try another book from him. royw365: i personally think sterling is a much better writer Z0rPr1me: I'll check those too royw365: einstein intersection is next right? Z0rPr1me: yep QueenSidhe: It's a weird book. royw365: ive never read it Z0rPr1me: this one look like a wierdo book! QueenSidhe: And all this tech mentioned isn't really defined for us. QueenSidhe: typing w/ chopsticks in hand is hard. Z0rPr1me: heh Z0rPr1me: take your time to eat... no rush. :-) QueenSidhe: Anyway, things I wanted to ask you guys about. That I thought about anyway. QueenSidhe: For this book and maybe other cyberpunk (Snow Crash being the only other cyberpunk I've read) what do you think lead society to this condition? QueenSidhe: It seems we've sunk to a really sad state in both books. QueenSidhe: Or is it just because we only see the "underworld" in this book. QueenSidhe: "Normal" people wouldn't know of/experience such things? Z0rPr1me: heh Z0rPr1me: What lead to that is the urge to reach for extreme sensation IMO and the higher productivity demand. royw365: back Z0rPr1me: Why enhance yourself ? To acheive higher production rate IMO. royw365: not sure about that, my thoughts are that the rich get richer and more jaded and the poor get poorer and more desperate Z0rPr1me: Agree with you QueenSidhe: So the rich did all the experimentation because they were bored and the poor were hoping this would help them get rich quick? royw365: and when certain things become more prevalent in society (the enhancements for example) it makes it easier for both the thrill-seekers and those looking for survival to cause more mayhem QueenSidhe: Or at least protect yourself from the gangs and such? royw365: that too vickie QueenSidhe: Well, whatever leads to it, I hope it doesn't come true. royw365: no kidding QueenSidhe: Both Snow Crash and Neuromancer are way too dark a society. royw365: nod, which i truly hope we never come to Z0rPr1me: heh QueenSidhe: Some of that might be cool to have, but everyone seems to be part of the underworld in Neuromancer. royw365: nod QueenSidhe: Congress would probably prohibit som of that stuff in the US. QueenSidhe: Based on the things they've done w/ abortion, cloning, etc. royw365: which in some ways is even worse than whatever theyre trying to repress QueenSidhe: going to the black market instead? royw365: nod, like abortion used to be (not that im for abortion, im strictly prolife as you probably know) QueenSidhe: But technically, abortion is fairly easy (and easy to kill you too). All the tech stuff in Neuromancer would cost a lot of money. royw365: nod, but trading sex for money would be a good way to get plenty of $$$ Z0rPr1me: yeah Z0rPr1me: Geez I'm so tired......
